new work

and other stories

'and other stories' - a portrait in stitches - embroidery brooch

smaller portrait with rust and blue

smaller portrait brooch with rust and blue

Just recently I have been looking back over the many, many stitches I have made..... and considered how my style of embroidery has evolved, altered, reshaped and transformed over time.... Looking back has reminded me just how much I have been inspired by the drawings of Madge Gill, how her influence comes into my work, over time. I particularly enjoy stitching smaller and very detailed portraits, especially compositions that involve many tiny faces. The challenge to create a complete 'picture' within a small-scale work such as a brooch is particularly attractive to me and for now I am still very inspired....

There will be a selection of brooches, especially smaller portraits, in my shop tomorrow....

'pastoral' - gouache on Fabriano paper

Alongside my embroidery stitching I have been working on new gouache paintings-sketches... I continue to explore colour, attracted to quite bold (for me) colours and combinations.

This is just a small preview of the works to be added to my shop tomorrow. I'll be updating at 2pm (uk time). Please note: there will be no update next week - so my next after tomorrow will be May 11th,

Hello again, and another mosaic to share with you this Monday. Thanks always to the featured artists and photographers. It's a chilly start to the week here - come on spring warmth, come on! Any glimpse of sun is most welcome these days. I'm getting impatient and must instead enjoy each subtle change that comes our way. There are many birds visiting our small garden: robins, wood pigeons, blackbirds, gangs of sparrows, blue tits, sparrows. I can remember a time when sparrows were almost a rare species. It's good to see a variety of wildlife.....

Today has been mostly stitching, realising I am (yet again) in need of more thread, more stitching and photographing. I am making new embroidery works for my shop and also for an upcoming event. I'll be one of a group of artists showing work in an open studio event during May weekends - in Brighton. I'll share more details soon. I do need to add an 'events and exhibitions' page to  my blog as I have quite a few things happening or lined up for this year! And it's good to be busy and invited to participate in events near and far.....

So this week I have a new selection of gouache paintings-sketches and also new embroidery brooches. I'll be updating my shop at the usual time of 2pm on Wednesday.

Tomorrow I'll share a post and write more regarding my newest work. Hope you are having a good start to your week.

new work

woman and child (grey & green)

a look at new work - (ahead of tomorrow's shop update) - above you may see 'woman with child (green and grey dress) - this is a larger embroidery brooch. Beginning with the central figure, I worked carefully to create an entire scene. I stop a great deal to take look, take the work away from the needle, consider I am getting the effect I wish to create. It's of course a time-consuming process. Someone once explained my work as a continuous drawing, but there is a lot of stop-start. My aim is to create a sense of continuity, so I am pleased if I can do so. I'm interested in historical painting and my embroidery works reflect this interest. Yet I am also creating my own world with historical periods and faces coming together in interesting ways. Yes I do look at historical costume and its detailing, but I am more concerned with how I can create my own visual language. I like to create a certain mood in each small piece/brooch - but I want there to be some ambiguity.

a gentle song - portrait brooch

Several new artworks on paper will be in my shop tomorrow ---

woodland scene

woodland scene - this is a collage inspired by my sketchbooks. I have combined a monoprint drawing with paint on paper.

Hello and here's another mosaic Monday.... posting later than I usually do as I have spent the day working intensely.... new stitches.... Thanks always to my Flickr contacts and please follow links to discover more...

It's been a chilly, somewhat sunny start to the week here. We are seeing many more birds in the garden, including a huge gang of starlings this evening. The trees are budding and it feels almost like spring....

This week I'll be updating my shop - usual day and time - Wednesday at 2pm UK. There will be a mix of embroidery, text-stitch work and paintings. Today I shared a new poem in stitch over at my writing blog nevering and you may see it here.

Tomorrow I hope to share more new work and say a little more.... As always I am grateful to you for reading here - have a good start to your week.

new work

A look at just a few of the new works I'll be adding to my shop tomorrow..... Above you may see 'regal lady with pinks and gold'. This is a larger brooch measuring approx. 8cm tall. Looking at my brooches you may have no doubt that I am interested in historical painting and costume - especially Tudor, Elizabethan, through to early nineteenth. My aim is not to make exact representations but to be inspired and blend details according to my own design.... I'm happiest when choosing colours to work together and adding details, especially tiny faces. These brooches are designed to be worn but are equally worth enjoying as a small artwork displayed as you may: perhaps  on a shelf or pinned to a favourite dress hanging on a wall. One of these days I'll write a blog post dedicated to displaying brooches - so if you have any photos of my brooches on display please get in touch.

fleeting gold

fleeting gold - acrylics and gouache on Fabriano paper..... continuing with my exploration of yellows and golds. This work of abstracted figures makes use of expressive marks and contrasting shades.... there is, I hope, a sense of a moment, a glance, a chance composition of shapes.....

woman in pink with green

woman in pink with green - acrylics and gouache on Fabriano paper.... continuing on with my spring sketches series, here's a postcard sized work. For me all painting now is about painting - so of course my work reflects this with a focus on abstraction and light. I'm interested too in how colour can play such a dynamic role. Even in these smaller works.

There will be a selection of new embroidery, paintings and text-stitch works in my shop tomorrow at 2pm UK time. Thanks always.

Hello, another rainy April day..... many thanks to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. It really is a pleasure to look and compile mosaics each week. I don't feel a Monday is quite the same without one. There was a time when I took a break from mosaics (you may remember, and if you go back a few years with me, thank you!) So until further notice there will be a mosaic here each week.

I've started my week with several hours of intense stitch work, making the completing stitches and crossed t's on a new stitch-text piece. If you would like to see it you may do so by visiting my writing blog here.

There will be a shop update this week on Wednesday at the usual time of 2pm. Expect to see a mix of paintings and embroidery/stitch. So tomorrow, if time allows, I'll preview some of my newest works and write a little more about them. This weekend I'll try to make time to share a post about my sketchbooks, as I haven't posted about them here for a few weeks.

Have a good start to your week and more soon

new work

just a look at some of the new works coming to my shop tomorrow...... I have been challenging myself to reconsider colour and so here are just a few of the playful paintings that have come about

two yellow figures

two figures in yellow - gouache and acrylics on Fabriano paper -
there's an energy to this painting that I am particularly happy with - perhaps going out for a long walk and coming home and painting is a good thing, as that is how this one came about. The figures are abstracted and within a landscape

interior with figures - yellow

interior with figures (yellow) - acrylics and gouache on linen -
the figures here are yet more abstracted yet recognisable - they are within and part of an interior with tones ranging from orange-yellow to pale pink, greys helping to structure and give a sense of space....

and of course my embroidery portraits allow me to pay attention to colour - but with a different approach to portraying figures, with a considered character, on a small scale......

woman and child with leaf motif

one of a selection of new embroidery portraits - here I have used a subtle palette of spring tones.....

thanks always

Hello and a happy April Monday to you - it's been a chilly, cloudy, almost sunny start to the week here. We can see signs of spring but many of the trees are still quite bare..... A walk through local woodland at the weekend gave me the chance to see many trees with fat buds and others still waiting.... So spring is tentatively making progress. Thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in the mosaic - please follow links to discover more.

A busy start to my week - I've been stitching all morning and am happy to say there will be new embroidery and paintings in my shop this week, Wednesday, at 2pm (UK time). Thank you always for taking a look and purchasing my work - it really is much appreciated.

I'm always considering new ideas and have been challenging myself to become ever more playful with colour. So you may see this week and weeks ahead a lively and varied use of colour in my work. I'm forever reinventing my most valued ideas of memory and shapes. Tomorrow I'll share with you a few new paintings and more. I'm working on an ongoing series of spring sketches and these are coming about quite happily, filled with colour......

More tomorrow..... have a good start to your week
