NEW WORK: still life
still life with frozen charlotte - gouache on Fabriano paper
Over this past week I challenged myself to paint two still life works - with a flat lay approach - that is looking more or less directly on the subject. The 'flat lay' is a thing you may be familiar with via looking at Instagram: photos of artfully arranged items, natural elements often factored in etc... It's become a genre, a type of photo, a thing. So painting in this way seemed like a good idea at the time...... Quite a challenge. To begin with getting the arrangement right, that took time.
and then of course the subject matter - what to choose from all the bits and bobs and odds and stuff that I hoard in the small cupboards of my studio? It was a tough choice. The vintage photograph was one of several that I bought a while ago and use for drawing reference and so on. I particularly enjoyed painting the natural elements in both of these still life works.
I am not sure just how often I will challenge myself to paint in this way, observing in such detail is not a problem, but looking down, looking at the painting, looking down etc... puts a lot of pressure on my neck. As you may imagine.
and a new angelic figure in this series - another detailed portrait.....
These and more will be in my shop tomorrow - thanks always.
PS. As you may know I am planning some quiet time in December. One of the things I want to do is redesign this blog - or rethink having a blog at all. Any thoughts? You can leave a comment or email me. I would be happy to hear from you if you have suggestions of what you would like to see.
