new work - figure paintings and more
new work - here's a further four works on paper..... These are all works I have painted over the past few weeks or so. I've been making work, putting it to one side, not looking over my shoulder, just moving on and seeing what comes about. It's been a very rewarding experience, as far as seeing how I can learn from myself and become absorbed in the problem solving of making a picture. It's not about making it look right so much as feel right. I think you will understand this, if you make any kind of creative work. Some times it's not about being accurate so much as it is about keeping it interesting for yourself and then having the push-pull and intrigue of building up layers to tell some sort of a story. I paint in often thin layers of colour. For several of my recent paintings I started with a red ground and then layered up from there. Acrylics allows me to turn a corner in a way that you just can't with gouache, especially with layering - gouache can get muddy if layered and reworked.
All these and more will be in my shop tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2pm uk time.
interior with pale figure and flowers
I started work on this last Friday and worked on it in stages until completing on Sunday. My starting point was a black and white polaroid photo of myself but I wanted to transform this into a more anonymous painting within a painting..... The still life element is a playful look at things and I've played with scale. The tones are muted, dream-like perhaps. This is not a painting about my own childhood but a few shared ideas on what it can be like to look back.....
