wishing you a happy new year

Wishing you a very happy new year - may 2017 bring us all new hope, creative energy and good health.

I look forward to sharing my new work with you. I've taken several days off from painting, over the Christmas period. It has been tricky for me to just stop! I am always making something, it seems. I've been doing a little writing, and a lot of reading. It's been good to spend time with my family.

Now I am feeling positive about the year ahead. I will be giving myself time to explore new ideas, to go with the flow of my work. It's with your interest that I am able to feel confident, to have the courage to explore new ideas is really the only way forward......

Hello - as promised a post featuring recent sketchbooks..... and may I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I'll be taking a break from blogging here but will return in the new year.

(my next shop update will be Wednesday January 4th.....)

My sketchbooks are just as important to me as ever. I value the space to play, ponder and mess things up a bit. I have several books on the go at any one time.

Hello, a happy Monday to you - and it's been another foggy, damp start to the week here. I can't remember a recent December quite so fogged over.... I'd much prefer bright and a little frosty but perhaps we'll get that soon enough. Thanks to all the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. A big thanks to everyone who has been featured this year. And thanks if you have been following links etc... There will be no mosaic next week.

This week I'm working on my sketchbooks, making a start on a few new works for the new year.... I've been baking and attempting to get into the festive mood..... Christmas and new year is usually a relaxed, quiet time for my family and I.

I know last week I promised a sketchbook post -but did not get round to it. So hope to make time to do that here this week.

Thanks always for reading here over the past months. It's been a pleasure to share my work and ideas here with you. I'll be making some changes to my blogging in the new year. I'll of course let you know all the details.

Hello, another Monday - and as we edge toward the end of the year, I am looking out of my window at a murky, so damp day... It has just got murkier and murkier as the day has gone on. So I am pleased to be able to work at home today, sorting paperwork, making marks in sketchbooks and getting on with this and that. Thanks always to my Flickr friends and the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. I hope you may have a moment to discover more beyond the links.....

So this week - no shop update as you may know - my next will be early on in the new year. I'll let you know details closer to then. I am working quietly on new ideas, considering and planning ahead - and catching my breath a bit, as the past few months have been intense, working most days and not thinking of much else! I am grateful. Thanks always for your interest, big thanks if you have purchased from me this year. Sorry if you were not able to purchase the artwork you wanted to, as things have sold quickly some weeks. I do appreciate this opportunity to share my work and send it near and far....

Also this week, I am continuing on with my poetry/photo project over at my writing blog nevering. It's not too late to visit there and read, when you may have a moment. Thanks to you if you are reading. I hope I may have some kind of physical publication out in 2017 - but we shall see....

Later this week I hope to share some of my sketchbook pages here.

Have a good start to your week.

Hello, a happy December Monday to you - it's been a chilly start to the month here, with a touch of frost each morning.... Many thanks to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic.

This week I'll be updating my shop on Wednesday - at the usual time of 2pm - and this will actually be the last update of the year. I had planned to update next week, but having considered my commitments and energy levels, I have made a decision to focus on this week and then consider work for early next year. Thanks for your understanding.

So this week I'll be offering an eclectic mix of new original work and I hope you enjoy taking a look. If you live outside of the UK please consider the possibility your package may not arrive before Christmas, but I am as always happy to send worldwide. Also please note I am not reserving any new work - as we are close to the festive season and this is my last update of the year.

Tomorrow I'll show here a small selection of new work. Have a good start to your week.

new work

Here's a further look at just a few of the artworks coming to my shop tomorrow - as I said in yesterday's post this is the last 'big update' of the year and so I am adding an eclectic mix of work (there will be two smaller updates in the first two weeks of December).

stacked cups and jug on printed cloth

a still life work, acrylics on Fabriano paper - 'stacked cups and jug on printed cloth. I am aiming toward making still life paintings that have an expressive feel with layering and texture. Working this way requires a great swoop of energy, but when the moment comes: I go for it.....

trees book II

In the past few weeks I've started a series of 'tree works' - these are painted on folded paper, to have the feel of a book, (yet would be best displayed framed flat). These tree works are responses to my walks in local woods and again are about energy, colour, and expressive mark making. I'm adding two of these tree works to my shop tomorrow. I anticipate working on continuing with this series as we move through winter and into spring, perhaps revisiting the general ideas, every so often....

gouache works

and a further selection of gouache works on Fabriano paper - various sizes - there will be a good selection to choose from.....

so just a few of what I'll be adding to my shop tomorrow, 2pm UK time. I hope you may enjoy seeing the selection. And thanks always for your interest.

Hello, a happy Monday to you - last Monday in November and a chilly start to the week here. Today is my son's birthday (16!) and so I am a little late posting today due to eating birthday cake..... Many thanks to all the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. Please do follow links to discover more.

This week - I am updating my shop on Wednesday at 2pm UK time - and this update will be a bumper one. My last big update of the year! There will be a good selection of new artworks on paper and i hope you may enjoy taking a look. There will be two smaller updates on December 7th and 14th.

Advance notice: I have now decided to temporarily close my shop from 24th December until 1st January. I'll be updating my shop again in early January - but quite frankly I can't think about January just yet!

So this week - as well as updating my shop on Wednesday  - on Thursday I shall begin a poetry project. From December 1st to December 23rd I'll be posting each day a small poem to my writing blog nevering. So if you fancy it, do consider looking out for a new poem - or, of course, you could read the collection over the holidays..... This is just a low-key project that I hope a few people will enjoy reading. I'm doing it as a way of sharing my writing and image-making.

Tomorrow I'll share with you a further selection of new work. Have a good start to your week

Hello again, and thanks to all the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic. Follow links to find out more. It's been a particularly dark and damp start to the week here. I've been working with added daylight - a daylight bulb in my anglepoise lamp and a daylight bulb in the ceiling. But it's not as good as getting a good dose of the real stuff.... ah well, it's that time of the year. When a moment of sun arrived, I grabbed my camera and quickly took photographs of recent work.

So I am busy as ever, working on new paintings and more. There will not be a shop update this week, as I am focusing on making new artwork - and am also soon to send a package of new paintings to The Edition Shop. They will no doubt offer the new paintings - a series of gouache portraits - some time later this week. I'll keep you posted here/ over at Instagram.

My next shop update will be next week - Wednesday 30th November - at the usual time of 2pm. Expect to see a lively mix of new work, in a variety of media.

Looking ahead to December - I am going to be sharing an online poetry project. There will be a new poem posted over at my writing blog nevering, most days in December. To find out more please read my post here.

Have a good start to your week.  I'll share a post of new work some time later this week.

I've been feeling my way back to more abstracted figures in acrylics.... It may be strange to say, but I had no conscious plan to paint snow. However, when I am working 'well', I am able to let the work flow and am guided mark by mark, without making too many predetermined plans. As I sometimes say to myself and others: having an idea is not always a good idea. Of course this may allow for a rather hit and miss approach to making images and I would agree there can be days when letting it flow just doesn't work at all. Yet, I am coming more to understand the above is my approach, if there is such a thing as one approach.

Anyway, I am thinking aloud here....

I'm working on an eclectic mix right now. Including new still life works - in gouache. I am exploring shelves as a way of organising and composing.... I spend a lot of time sitting next to a cabinet crammed with my pots and bottles collections. I enjoy painting and sorting shapes in this way.

Hello, a new week - a new mosaic..... thanks always to my Flickr contacts for their wonderful imagery. Please follow links to discover more. Well, it's a bit of a dull, overcast, chilly sort of a day today.

November weather really. I should not be surprised, but I've struggled to take photographs of new work today - and when a moment of light comes I dash outside with my camera. I try, as much as possible, to take photographs in natural light and will stand outside in the cold when necessary, so long as it is dry of course. I never take a good light day for granted. A very sunny day can be just as tricky! Oh, one can really never have it quite right, all of the time....

Apart from taking photographs, I have started the week by painting and writing notes to myself with suggestions for new work to come. At the moment I am working on an eclectic mix of new artwork, and am embracing new ideas as they come, seeing connections in colours and mood, and shape.

I am making work for my own shop and for other places. It is a busy time but I am enjoying the process of painting and moving from one an idea to the other. The only thing I have to be mindful of is to take a little time out, just now and then - at least to drink a cup of tea and catch up with a newspaper, or a game of scrabble. It's the small pleasures...... I am rather busy and my head is full of paintings, so I am not reading at the moment but have promised myself to have my usual holiday reading time in December.

I've updated my shop's news page (see shop news) with a list of dates you might like to see. I have four upcoming shop updates and then will be taking a break until the new year.

So I'll be updating my shop this week on Wednesday at the usual time of 2pm. Expect to see a variety of new artwork. Tomorrow I'll share a 'new work' post.

Have a good start to your week.

new work

still life work

a look at work on my desk this afternoon - still life paintings and a figure within her own 'still life' collection..... all in gouache... Although my focus these days is figures and their worlds, every so often (quite often) I feel inclined to make a still life work. Each is like a mediation, a simple playfulness of shapes and earth tones....

Just a few of the works that will be in my shop tomorrow - I also have a series of monochrome head portraits and further figure works. I hope you enjoy taking a look - 2pm is the time.

Hello, a happy November Monday to you - well actually it's my birthday today... it's been the usual chilly sort of a day, with hints of sunshine. I've been very busy painting all day and so am posting rather later than usual. Thanks always to my Flickr contacts for the images in this mosaic - please do click on links and discover more.....

So yes, a busy start to my week here. I've just put down my paint brush and eaten a slice of birthday cake. I am busy making new paintings for my own shop and other places.

There are now new paintings available at The Edition Shop online gallery - if you would like to take a look - please do as several have sold already.

I'll be updating my own shop on Wednesday at 2pm (UK time). I update most Wednesdays, same time. I get emails asking if I have a mailing list but at the moment I am keeping things simple - same day, same time updating. Please follow me here and over at Instagram to see previews and the work I am creating. Thanks always.

Have a good start to your week. A post of new work tomorrow.

new work

a robin spoke

'a robin spoke' - gouache on Fabriano paper

I have a variety of new artworks to add to my shop tomorrow. Above is one of an ongoing series of woodland inspired paintings, in gouache.

Throughout November I hope to offer a selection of monochrome gouache works on paper. These will have a wintry feel, inspired by my sketchbooks, figures in my paintings and the English landscape. The artworks seen here each measure 14cm x 10cm (so about postcard size). They are painted on my favoured Fabriano paper....

These are just some of the artworks - I hope you enjoy seeing the whole selection tomorrow - 2pm UK time

Hello, last day of October - and such a glorious day here in the south of England! Blue skies, splendid autumn colours - you could say it's the best of autumn in a day. We have had several mornings in a row with heavy fog and the weekend was quite murky, so today's sun is very welcome. Thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic - a kind of autumn colours in this, though I always like to keep them eclectic.....

This week - I am updating my shop on Wednesday at 2pm. I've just had a look through the work I have set aside for this week, and really want to keep it all - (but do need to sell! - so in the shop it shall go.....) I hope you enjoy taking a look.

I'll share a preview post tomorrow - showing a few more of the new paintings. Have a good start to your week and more soon.

A look at just a few of the many and various artworks I have been working on this week. It's been a busy week, with concentrated painting most days. I have been making work for my own shop, The Edition Shop (online gallery) and another gallery. So this keeps me very busy. I am mostly painting or thinking about painting, a great deal of the time. And I am happy for this to be the case.

I've a good selection of work already collecting up and ready to add to my shop this coming Wednesday. There will be a variety of paintings and I hope you may enjoy seeing the selection.

Hello - another October Monday, and a chilly start to the week here - the trees are becoming bare and there's a nip in the air.... Thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this mosaic. Please follow links to discover more.

I am not updating my shop this week - as I am busy working on new paintings. It's a lovely thing to be quite so busy, and so here I am making work for my shop and also for galleries. So I'm deep into the painting this week, and will hope to share a few new ones with you here at the weekend.

NEXT SHOP UPDATE: Wednesday 2nd November at the usual time of 2pm (UK).

My shop should be updated most weeks through November and into December. At the end of December and into the new year I'll be taking a short break. Of course I'll always let you know here when the shop is being updated, so please do check here (or on my shop site - see 'shop news').

This afternoon I just completed a painting titled 'Silver and Gold' - a gouache work. I think this one will be heading to The Edition Shop. They will have a new selection from me in November.

Have a good start to your week, stay warm and bright.....

new work

'Lanterns'

'Lanterns' - a larger and quite detailed gouache work on Fabriano paper

winter may wait

'winter may come' - gouache on Fabriano paper

Yes, definitely feeling autumnal..... I am making the most of all the colours around me for inspiration. I know sooner rather than later I may just move on to wintry landscapes, and am also making work with no exact season.... 'Lanterns' is quite a detailed work for me. I wished to convey a sense of moonlight, with lantern light, with a warm and friendly mood.....

a new tree

'a new tree'

this work is acrylics on paper. I like to make expressive, quite abstracted work with acrylics. I want it to look like paint with visible brush marks perhaps and to have a sweep of light about it. I think I've just about achieved my aim with this portrait. Emphasis is on colour and simple shapes.

These are just three of the (about a dozen) new artworks to be added to my shop tomorrow. I'll be updating at the usual time of 2pm (uk). Thanks always.

Hello, a happy October Monday to you - a bright, mild autumnal start to the week here.... It's sunny outside at the moment but I know the evening will be here soon, and we are now coming to the 'eating dinner with the lights on' time of year, again. It comes around again.... Thanks always to the artists and photographers for their images in this week's mosaic. Please do follow links to discover much more.

This week: I started the week by making a simple pledge - noting that I now have 10k+ followers on Instagram, I am most grateful - and so as a small gesture of gratitude I shall be donating 10% of shop sales this week to Amnesty International. The people that kindly follow my work are near and far, so I have chosen to give to an international charity that works for people everywhere it can. This is really just a humble thing to do, but something I want to do.

Thanks always for following me here! I realise blog reading might not be top of people's lists of things to do. But I hope you are enjoying what you see, and will continue to pop by. Writing here does allow me to explain a little more, give background to ideas, and reach people who might not be into Instagram, for example. We all have our social media preferences. I've not much time for Facebook, these days. I just don't like it so much. And there are so many hours in each day etc.....

I have been busy painting today and shall share new work with you tomorrow. Autumn is a big influence in my work and palette right now - but I am exploring other ideas too. I've also been working on new monochrome portraits.

More tomorrow - have a good start to your week.

my work in other places

I am delighted to have been asked to sell a selection of my paintings via The Edition, an online gallery, based in the UK. A selection of new paintings are now avaiable - a few have sold already. The Edition stocks work by a variety of excellent artists (and myself), and is very much worth a look.

http://www.theeditionshop.co.uk

I expect to be sending more work to The Edition in the months ahead.

Of course I am continuing to sell directly myself, via my own shop (updated most Wednesdays).

**

The Oriel Myrddin Gallery, in Carmarthen Wales, has a Makers Market coming up - starting October 22nd, featuring a variety of craft and art. I have a selection of framed and unframed smaller paintings included in this exhibition. If you are anywhere near this part of Wales please do visit!

This allows me to show you one of my smaller paintings (featured in the above exhibition) - framed.

Quickly photographed as I was packing up to send..... This is one of my smaller sized gouache paintings (12cm x 9cm) and has been framed in a 10inch by 8inch frame. You may see it has a thick mount border, lending the work a clean presentation. This is an example of how to frame - if you purchase an unframed painting from me, you have, of course, a variety of options. I know some people opt to frame my work in smaller frames, larger, or vintage frames, grouped together on a wall....

Have a good weekend

new work - brilliant trees

a seat by the trees

'a seat by the trees' - gouache on Fabriano paper (20cm x 15cm)

If you have been following my work recently you may have noted just how much I enjoy painting trees.... I enjoy the shapes, the colours and challenge of them. I've always been in awe of brilliant trees. It's now that I must admit how lacking in knowledge I can be, regarding their identification. That is something I am putting right - each time I go for a walk I seek to id the trees that I see, and there are so many. But locally, we have oak, birch, mountain ash, willow.....

two trees in a dish

'two trees in a dish' - acrylics on Fabriano paper (14cm x 11cm)

Trees again, but enjoying the idea of a 'world in a dish' - and yes I do like a good bonsai. I'm interested in the simplicity of Japanese ideas and design. Expressive and textured brush work.

These are just two of the (about a dozen) paintings that will be in my shop tomorrow - 2pm (uk time). Thanks always.

Hello, a good Monday to you - thanks always to the artists and photographers featured in this week's mosaic.... It's been a beautifully sunny if chilly start to the week here. A lovely autumn day, with plenty of blue sky. The leaves are slowly turning and falling, the days are 'drawing in'..... I remember hearing that phrase as a child and always imagined someone, with a lot of pencils in their fist, scribbling out the daylight.....

This week - I've been painting today, a new one called 'magpie walk' - I'll hope to have photographs to share with you tomorrow.... As you may imagine it is another in my ongoing series of woodland-inspired works. I'm hoping to get inky tomorrow and make some monoprint drawings.

My shop will be updated on Wednesday - usual time of 2pm. Thanks always for your interest, it is very much appreciated.

More tomorrow.... have a good start to your week.

Hello October - thanks to all the featured artists and photographers in this week's mosaic. It's been a bright, chilly, rather splendid autumn Monday here in the south of England....

My apologies for not blogging over the weekend - as I try to do at least most weeks - but I did have a busy one. I spent time painting, as well as visiting a local market - and it was my sister's birthday yesterday. Today would have been my grandfather's birthday. My grandfather enjoyed creative woodworking in his retirement from an engineering career. His sheer determination to teach himself skills and get better at them - I hope that's something I continue to learn from. I remember asking my Grandad to make me a paper-making frame, and he went ahead and made me a beautifully varnished oak frame with mesh, just as I had described - though he was completely baffled by my interest in making paper! And although I spent many hours making paper, and enjoying the process very much, I no longer make paper these days. But I know how, and I have learned from that creative experimenting.

These days I have less time for trying out new crafts (to be honest what is there I have not tried: candlemaking?). I am enjoying my painting and drawing very much. This morning I sent work to an online gallery and they will soon have a selection of my work available. More details coming soon. I will be continuing to sell via my shop too, of course. The next update is this week, Wednesday, at the usual time of 2pm.

Have a good start to your week - a new work post coming tomorrow......

new work

a place by the woods

'a place by the woods' - gouache on paper (24cm x 21cm)

exploring the woods and what you might find..... I had almost forgotten the pleasure of 'construction' - I've painted houses and buildings previously, but not for a while..... this is one of an ongoing series. There will be one other 'dwelling within a landscape' included in my shop update tomorrow

just enough wool

'just enough wool' - a smaller painting in gouache (12cm x 9cm)

woman by a window

'woman by a window' - another smaller painting in gouache (12cm x 9cm)

These are just a few of the varied selection I have ready to add to my shop tomorrow (2pm uk time) - I hope you may enjoy seeing each work.

Just a reminder, as I have been receiving several requests - I don't reserve work ahead of a shop update (I will reserve an artwork that is in my shop but not before it is added). This is to give anyone interested a chance to purchase. This seems the least unfair way of doing things and thanks for your understanding. I am always humbled by the response from people when several want a particular artwork. Never do I take your interest for granted and always do I want to you to feel happy with your choices. It's a pleasure to send my work near and far, and thank you always.
